Yoga After Injury

I love yoga for many reasons. I love the calm I feel after a good session on my mat, I love the community of like minded individuals and I like the physical workout that comes with it. What I don't always like is motivating myself to get off the couch or driving my car in crappy weather to get to class. Add to that the on and off recurring pain of a foot injury and going to yoga can seem more like a task than a gift. That said, I know that even when my foot is feeling stiff and painful, a few Sun Salutations and a Warrior Pose or two later I will be energized and optimistic.

I ruptured my foot by rolling it on concrete stairs months and month ago. It is likely that it will give me trouble for the rest of my life. It creates new challenges on the mat that I never thought would be an issue for me. Simple balancing poses can become very difficult and rolling over my toes from Chaturanga to Upward Facing Dog is currently not an option. I have had to slow down and approach my practice from a new angle. I do look for the positive in my injury though. I have become more present and self aware. I have also learned that my practice is about reaching my personal goals and that my limitations may be greater than others. My practice will continue to change as the years go by and that is okay, I just need to keep it going. And for a little inspiration, I will end this post with a video of my favorite celebrity Yogini, Meghan Currie. Enjoy!
